Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral R Hari Kumar, addressed concerns regarding maritime safety, highlighting the challenges faced in the region. From November to March, over 90 maritime incidents, including drone and missile attacks as well as piracy, have been recorded, underscoring the volatile security situation in crucial sea lanes.
Indian Navy Bolsters Maritime Security
Admiral Kumar emphasized the Indian Navy’s proactive role in maintaining maritime security, with more than 5000 personnel deployed in ongoing operations. A total of 21 ships have been mobilized for various maritime operations, focusing on anti-drone, anti-missile, and anti-piracy measures in the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, and Red Sea.
The Indian Navy’s efforts have not only thwarted potential threats but also resulted in the rescue of 110 lives, comprising both Indians and foreign nationals. Admiral Kumar noted that Indian vessels have not been targeted directly, with attacks primarily aimed at ships with links to Israel or those flying the flags of Western nations like the UK and the US. The involvement of the Indian Navy is crucial, given the presence of Indian crew members on nearly all affected vessels, highlighting the navy’s commitment to safeguarding Indian interests and international maritime security.
