Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to depart for Indonesia to participate in the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit. The visit is expected to focus on enhancing India’s trade and security cooperation with the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) bloc, consisting of 10 influential nations in the region.
Indonesia is hosting these summits as the current Chair of ASEAN
Indonesia is hosting these summits as the current Chair of ASEAN, and India, along with other countries like the US, China, Japan, and Australia, holds the status of a dialogue partner with the ASEAN.
During the summit talks in Jakarta, PM Modi is likely to unveil a new initiative aimed at strengthening India-ASEAN maritime security cooperation, highlighting India’s commitment to regional stability and security.
Given the proximity of the G20 Summit, scheduled for September 9-10 in New Delhi, PM Modi’s visit to Indonesia is expected to be relatively brief. The G20 Summit will be a significant international event, and India’s engagement with ASEAN leaders is expected to lay the groundwork for further cooperation on trade and security matters.
Notably, in official government materials, PM Modi has been referred to as the “Prime Minister of Bharat,” sparking a political debate about the nomenclature used for the country’s leadership. This controversy arose following a G20 Summit dinner invitation that referred to the “President of Bharat” instead of the “President of India,” leading to opposition parties alleging that it was an attempt by the ruling BJP to divide people and distort history in connection with the formation of political alliances.
