International Yoga Day 2024: Worldwide celebration of the International Day of Yoga was a testament to the popularity and advantages of this centuries-old Indian practice. Vibrant celebrations arranged by Indian missions and local communities celebrated this significant day in a number of places, from Thailand and New Zealand to New York.
Yoga at Times Square, New York
In New York, the heart of the city witnessed a unique celebration at Times Square. Yoga practitioners gathered for day-long sessions on the eve of the International Day of Yoga. The Consulate General of India in New York, in collaboration with the Times Square Alliance, hosted special yoga sessions coinciding with the summer solstice, symbolizing balance and harmony.
Japan’s Celebration at Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple
The 10th International Day of Yoga was observed in Tokyo, Japan, despite the wet weather. The gathering at the Tsukiji Hongwanji Temple was arranged by the Indian embassy, and it was well attended by diplomats, members of the Indian diaspora, and local enthusiasts. The spirit of yoga flourished in the busy metropolis despite the rain.
Kuwait’s Yoga Celebrations
In Kuwait, the Indian embassy shared on their X handle, “On the occasion of #IDY2024, yoga trainers from various institutes and studios across Kuwait demonstrated mesmerizing #yoga performances, showcasing their exquisite skills and intricate movements.” The event highlighted the talent and dedication of yoga practitioners in the country.
New Zealand’s High Commission Event
In New Zealand, the Indian High Commission celebrated the day with members of the Indian community, Kiwi friends, and representatives from various yoga institutes. The High Commission noted the global impact of yoga, emphasizing its positive influence on countless lives. The event highlighted the growing popularity of yoga in New Zealand and its role in promoting wellness and unity.
Thailand’s University Collaborations
Thailand witnessed several universities and institutions hosting yoga events in collaboration with the Indian Embassy. Siam University saw significant participation from students and faculty, with Thailand President Pornchai Mongkhonvanit gracing the occasion. These events underscored the educational and communal benefits of practicing yoga.
Papua New Guinea’s Community Engagement
The Indian High Commission hosted a yoga event in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Diplomats, local PNG residents, and representatives of the Indian diaspora were present during the ceremony. Governor Powes Parkop of NCD urged people to do yoga and promoted it as a movement to share its advantages with other communities.
