An Iranian-Swedish dual national was hanged by Iran on Saturday after being charged with planning a 2018 attack on a military parade that left at least 25 people dead. He was one of numerous opponents of Tehran that had been apprehended overseas in recent years amid tensions with the West.
Farajollah Cha’ab, also known as Habib Asyoud, was the head of the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahwaz, an Arab separatist group that has carried out bombings of oil pipelines and other attacks in Khuzestan province of Iran, which is home to significant deposits of oil. In the times following the incident in 2018, that group made a claim for it.
Cha’ab’s execution occurs as a Swedish court last year handed down a life sentence to an Iranian for his involvement in the 1988 mass executions that took place in Iran following the conclusion of its war with Iraq.
Tehran reacted strongly to that statement because it has previously used captives as negotiating chips with the West. As Iran’s nuclear programme continues to advance quickly, tensions between the West and Iran are also high, and at least one more prisoner with connections to the West could be put to death.
In a long statement, the Mizan news agency of the Iranian court announced Cha’ab’s hanging execution. It named him as the terrorist group’s commander and asserted—without offering any proof—that he was connected to Swedish, Israeli, and American intelligence agencies.
In addition to several assaults on government buildings and other targets, it charged his gang with killing or injuring 450 individuals over the years.
