Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei on Sunday opened an official account on the micro-blogging site Twitter in Hindi. Besides Hindi, he has also opened accounts in other languages including Persian, Urdu, Arabic, French, Spanish, Russian and English.
From his bio to tweets, everything in Ayatollah Khamenei’s account has been written in Devenagiri script. The new account so far has 3,640 followers and 7 following. Two tweets had already been posted from the account.
Khamenei’s twitter accounts have attracted much interest in the past as well. Last year in November, several Iranian activists demanded a ban on his social media accounts after his decision to shut off the internet access across the country over protests of national interests including fuel prices among others.
Again in February this year, several Republican senators in the US urged Twitter to suspend his accounts considering the US sanction law.
Ayatollah Khamenei is a Twelver Shia Marja’ and the second and current Supreme Leader of Iran. He has previously served as the President of Iran from 1981 to 1989.
