Israel-Palestine Conflict: Israeli forces declare the completion of the encirclement of Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, signaling readiness to escalate the conflict. President Biden notes progress in talks for the release of 240 hostages, with indications of an imminent deal between Israel and Hamas mediated by Qatar.
Exchange of 50 hostages:
The proposed agreement involves exchanging 50 hostages for a three-day ceasefire to facilitate emergency aid delivery to Gaza. Concerns arise over potential escalation and discussions on capital punishment for Palestinian militants. US believes an agreement is nearing, while Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu meets with the war cabinet and hostage relatives.
Heavy strikes precede potential intensified fighting in Jabalia. Over 13,300 Palestinians, including 5,600 children and 3,550 women, reported killed since the conflict began.
Even as the Israeli military’s assault on Gaza City continues to launch rockets into Israel, the United States said on Monday that it believes Israel and Hamas are moving closer to striking an agreement amid the ongoing talks about an expected hostage swap.
Agreement was imminent:
On Monday, US President Joe Biden expressed his belief that an agreement was imminent. Regarding a hostage arrangement, White House spokesman John Kirby stated, “We’re closer now than we’ve ever been.”
Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, met with members of his war cabinet and the families of approximately 240 individuals who were taken prisoner by Hamas during the October 7 raid in southern Israel. The gathering took place at Tel Aviv’s Kirya military installation on Monday night.
