Israel: On Sunday, an Israeli strike hit a residential building in Kafr Sousa, a densely populated area in the heart of Damascus, killing 15 people, including civilians. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the strike and stated that it targeted a heavily guarded security complex near Iranian installations.
Israeli missiles target residential area
The strike damaged several buildings in the area, including a 10-storey building, and it is one of many Israeli airstrikes that have targeted suspected Iranian-sponsored weapons transfers and personnel deployments in Syria over the past decade.
Kafr Sousa is a high-security area of the Syrian capital that houses senior security officials, security branches, and intelligence headquarters, and it is rare for Israeli strikes to hit residential areas in the region. The strike occurred just two weeks after a massive earthquake shook the area.
Israel has repeatedly stated that it will not let Iran extend its influence to its borders, and the country’s military has been actively targeting Iranian installations in Syria. On January 2, Israel launched missiles at the international airport of Syria’s capital, killing two soldiers and injuring two others. These actions have heightened tensions in the region and led to concerns about a larger conflict.
Regular strikes by Israel over Syria
The strike in Kafr Sousa follows a suspected ISIS attack in the central desert province of Homs on Saturday that killed 53 people. The ongoing violence in Syria has resulted in the displacement of millions of people and created a humanitarian crisis in the region.
