At least 15 Palestinians, including three Islamic Jihad commanders, have died as a result of Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.
According to Palestinian health officials, those killed included eight women and children. 22 more people suffered injuries. According to Israel, it has started an operation to take out militants who are a direct threat to its population. Israe Islamic Jihad is vowing revenge, and militants in Gaza are expected to respond by firing rockets into Israel.
Whether Hamas, which controls Gaza, decides to join in will probably determine how far things escalate. According to reports, Israeli officials are getting ready for days of combat.
The attacks were the most lethal since three days of fighting between Israel and Islamic Jihad in August of last year, during which 49 Palestinians in Gaza lost their lives.
The most recent attacks occurred early on Tuesday morning when 40 Israeli aeroplanes and helicopters assaulted Gaza in waves, damaging homes and terrifying locals.
At least two apartments had their fronts torn off, and others were damaged, according to pictures.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, four women and four children were also killed. Children and women made almost half of those hurt, and several of them were hospitalised in critical condition.
The former chairman of the Gaza Dentists’ Association and a Russian citizen, Dr. Jamal Khaswan, along with his wife Mervat and their son Youssef, age 21, were all killed, according to the Russian Embassy in the Palestinian Territories.
According to the report, their other two children lived. They included Diala, a 10-year-old girl who was seen crying out for her father while seated in the front seat of an ambulance.
A friend and coworker of Dr. Khaswan, Dr. Wafai al-Sousi, denounced the “cowardly targeting” of the family.
