Sunday’s blast in Istanbul was a terrorist attack by a woman, Turkish Vice President Fuat Okte said, citing preliminary data. The explosion occurred on Sunday afternoon near the pedestrian tourist route Istiklal. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the death toll from the blast had risen to six. “We consider this to be a terrorist act, carried out by a criminal,” Sputnik was quoted as saying by Okte. A woman carried out the bomb blast. The senior official said the number of injured has risen from 53 to 81, two of whom are in critical condition.
Oktay pledged that Turkish authorities would immediately investigate the act of terrorism and bring those responsible to justice. The death toll in Sunday’s explosion in the center of Istanbul rose to six, Erdogan said, adding that preliminary data indicated the blast was a terrorist attack.
Blast on a busy road
The avenue is a busy thoroughfare popular with locals and tourists. There are many shops and restaurants here. Earlier also there were blasts in 2015 and 2017. The responsibility was claimed by the Islamic State and some Kurdish groups.
India expressed condolences
India has also reacted in the matter. Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that India expresses its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Turkey on the tragic loss of lives in the explosion in Istanbul today. Our sympathies are also with the injured. We wish him a speedy recovery.
