‘It’s Not My Place to React;’ US Ambassador Eric Garcetti on PoK Visit Controversy

Eric Garcetti: The US ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, claimed on Tuesday that the American delegation had also been to Jammu and Kashmir for the G20 summit, despite a controversy surrounding the US envoy to Islamabad’s visit to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Garcetti was responding to inquiries over Donald Blome, the US ambassador to Pakistan, who visited Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) last week for six days.

Jammu and Kashmir Issue Should Be Resolved Bilaterally

”It’s not my place to react to the US Ambassador in Pakistan but he’s been before and we obviously had part of our delegation in Jammu and Kashmir during G20 as well,” The American envoy told reporters on the sidelines of the 20th Indo-US Economic Summit. The Jammu and Kashmir issue must be settled bilaterally by India and Pakistan and not by any other party, including the US, according to Garcetti.

”We’ll stay engaged but this is an issue we very religiously know that has to be resolved between India and Pakistan not by any third party including the US,” he said. According to a report in Pakistani media, US Ambassador to Pakistan Blome visited the Gilgit-Baltistan region of PoK and spoke with the inhabitants there. When questioned about a Nazi war veteran receiving a standing ovation in the Canadian Parliament, Garcetti responded, “I think everybody recognises the mistake.”Regarding the US providing information regarding the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, he declined to comment.

Garcetti on Canada, Biden’s Invitation to Republic Day Celebrations, and More

”It’s not my place to speak on another country, Canada. As a matter of business not just this, we don’t talk about intelligence or criminal justice matters,” Garcetti said. In answer to a query, Garcetti stated that although the itinerary had not yet been finalised, India has invited US President Joe Biden to attend the Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi as the primary guest. ”There is an invitation that has been extended. Schedule not confirmed yet,” Garcetti said.
