On Tuesday, April 25, 2023, the Japanese lunar exploration company ispace failed to perform the first lunar landing ever. The company was getting ready to set down the Series 1 lunar lander for the HAKUTO-R Mission 1 mission. On April 25, at approximately 10:10 IST, the Series 1 lander was supposed to touch down on the lunar surface, however it did not.
As of 8:00 AM JST (4:30 AM IST) on April 26, connection between the lander and the ispace Mission Control Centre in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, had been lost. Although it had been expected that communication would continue even after touchdown, the fact that the link has been broken suggests that the lander may not have been able to land on the moon.
As part of the first HAKUTO-R Mission, the lunar lander was launched atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. In December 2022, the spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida.
