In an effort to combat national pessimism and navigate political divisions in Washington, President Joe Biden used his State of the Union speech on Wednesday to urge Republicans to join him in “finishing the job” of reviving the economy and bringing the country together.
The president began his speech by praising the nation’s achievements in the fight against the coronavirus outbreak.
He said, “The US has emerged stronger from the pandemic. Two years ago, Covid shut down our businesses, closed our schools, and robbed us of so much. Today, Covid no longer controls our lives.”
“Two years ago, our democracy faced its greatest threat since the Civil War. Today, though bruised, our democracy remains unbowed and unbroken,” Joe Biden said.
His speech comes at a time when there is turmoil both at home and abroad, most notably the conflict in Ukraine and the escalating hostilities with China.
Biden declared in his second State of the Union speech: “We have added a record 12 million new jobs as of this moment. In comparison to previous presidents, more employment were generated in just two years.”
Too many people have been left behind or treated like they’re invisible”: Biden
He said, “My economic plan is about investing in places and people that have been forgotten. Amid the economic upheaval of the past four decades, too many people have been left behind or treated like they’re invisible.”
“That’s why we’re building an economy where no one is left behind. Jobs are coming back, pride is coming back because of the choices we made in the last two years. This is a blue-collar blueprint to rebuild America and make a real difference in your lives,” the US President said.
Joe Biden promised to cap the cost of insulin to make it accessible for every American and said, “Every day, millions need insulin to control their diabetes so they can stay alive. Insulin has been around for 100 years. It costs drug companies just $10 a vial to make. But, big pharma has been unfairly charging people hundreds of dollars – and making record profits. Not anymore… Let’s cap the cost of insulin at $35 a month for every American who needs it.”
“Big corporations aren’t just taking advantage of the tax code. They’re taking advantage of you, the American consumer,” Biden said.
During his address at Capitol Hill, Joe Biden announced a new standard requiring all construction material used in federal projects to be ‘Made in America’.
“Lumber, glass, drywall, fiber optic cable. And on my watch, American roads, bridges, and American highways will be made with American products as well,” Joe Biden said.
