Johns Hopkins: Indian American makes it to the list of world’s brightest students for second year in a row

Natasha Perianayagam, an Indian-American student, was nominated to the Johns Hopkins Center For Talented Youth’s list of the “world’s brightest” students for the second year in a row based on the results of exams taken by more than 15,000 students from 76 different countries that were above grade level.

13-year-old Perianayagam attends Florence M. Gaudineer Middle School in New Jersey. In the spring of 2021, while she was in Grade 5, she also took the Johns Hopkins Center For Talented Youth (CTY) exam.

Her verbal and quantitative test scores were on par with the 90th percentile for advanced Grade 8 achievement, propelling her to the honours list for the year. She was recognised this year for her outstanding achievement on the SAT, ACT, School and College Ability Test, or other test she took as part of the CTY Talent Search, according to a press release from the institution on Monday.

Perianayagam among 15,300 students from 76 countries who joined CTY in 2021-22 Talent Search Year

Perianayagam, whose parents are from Chennai, revealed that in her free time, she enjoys drawing and reading JRR Tolkien’s books.In order to identify gifted kids from around the world and give a clear picture of their academic ability, CTY conducted above-grade-level testing. Perianayagam joined CTY in the 2021–22 Talent Search year together with 15,300 other students from 76 other countries, according to a university press release.

Less than 27% of those individuals met the requirements to participate in the CTY ceremony, earning high or grand honours based on their test results.

Perianayagam received the best grades out of all candidates in her most recent attempt.

“This is not just recognition of our students’ success on one test, but a salute to their love of discovery and learning, and all the knowledge they have accumulated in their young lives so far,”

She further added,

“It is exciting to think about all the ways in which they will use that potential to discover their passions, engage in rewarding and enriching experiences, and achieve remarkable things — in their communities and in the world,”
