US officials reported on Tuesday that the Taliban had killed an Islamic State fighter who was the “mastermind” behind a suicide bombing at Kabul’s international airport in 2021 that claimed the lives of 13 American soldiers and a large number of civilians while the country was being chaotically evacuated.
In the chaotic days following the Taliban takeover on August 26, 2021, while US troops were attempting to assist Americans and Afghans in fleeing, a bombing took place, adding to America’s sense of failure after 20 years of war.
“He was a key ISIS-K official directly involved in plotting operations like Abbey Gate, and now is no longer able to plot or conduct attacks,” In a statement, White House spokesman John Kirby made reference to the Kabul airport’s Abbey Gate entry, the site of the explosion. He didn’t mention the official by name.
The Taliban’s adversary is the Afghan affiliate of Islamic State, often known as Islamic State Khorasan or ISIS-K after a former name for the area. In 2014, Islamic State-affiliated fighters first showed up in eastern Afghanistan and eventually spread to other regions.
