On Wednesday at the 54th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, a female activist from the Kashmir valley exposed Pakistan’s false propaganda.
Socio-political activist Tasleema Akhtar stated in her intervention that as a local, she would want to highlight the glaring developmental differences between Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) and the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir (JK UT).
“While JK UT is bringing transformational changes for the betterment of the region, people of PoJK are living at the mercy of the Pakistan government having utter disregard for people over there and their basic human rights and amenities”, she told the Council.
Pakistan is struggling to meet its basic financial responsibilities
She claimed that while Pakistan is struggling to meet its basic financial responsibilities and is protecting terrorist organisations to conduct a proxy war against India, the Union government is investing in infrastructure and development projects in J&K while also bringing peace and prosperity to the region.
“PoJK lacks even basic infrastructure and amenities, with negligible investment and blatant misappropriation of its resources by Pakistan”, she added.
According to Tasleema, JK UT is far better to PoJK in terms of education and literacy rates. In JK UT, the Indian government invests nine times as much in education as its counterpart. PoJK is experiencing a serious crisis in its educational system due to a significant lack of basic amenities like bathrooms, clean water, and buildings with roofs, which severely impacts pupils and raises the dropout rate.
Health industry undergoing change:
The health industry is likewise undergoing change. National health programmes allow JK UT residents to receive health benefits even in remote locations, whereas PoJK residents can only hope for such benefits in the distant future. The Government of India offers universal health insurance coverage for up to USD 6,000 per family to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir.
But first, health.
According to Tasleema, the poverty rate in JK UT is likewise quite low when compared to PoJK. When compared to PoJK, whose per capita income is roughly USD 1,000 and USD 250 in Gilgit-Baltistan, JK UT’s per capita income of USD 2,500 is also higher.
“Tourism influx is also an all-time record high in JK UT with around 20 million tourists arrival so far in 2023 besides successful completion of G-20 Summit meeting in Srinagar on May 22-24, 2024, on the other hand, tourists inflow in PoJK has severely low,” she said.
Tasleema told the UN Human Rights Council that he “therefore, would urge the honourable council to take appropriate measures in setting up accountability for the Pakistan government for protecting the basic human rights of the people of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmi.”
Later, Tasleema blasted Pakistan for supporting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and “playing” with the innocent lives of the Kashmiri people in an interview with media.
