King Charles III : Britain’s King Charles III has conferred a top Scottish award upon his wife, Camilla, coinciding with his birthday celebrations.
A Buckingham Palace statement reads, “The King has been graciously pleased to appoint the Queen to the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle.”
King James VII revived The Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, “which are entirely the personal gift of the British monarch,” says India Today.
The Order, which is like a club membership, comprises the Sovereign and sixteen Knights and Ladies. It also includes a few members of the royal household and other foreign monarchs.
The Order’s primary emblem is the thistle, which is the national flower of Scotland. The motto of this top award is “No one provokes me with impunity.”
Other members of this top Order are Prince Willian, heir apparent, and Princess Anne.
While most British orders of chivalry cover the whole country, the U.K. has three awards that pertain to individual nationalities.
For England, the pertinent national honour is Most Noble Order of the Garter. It was founded in the mid-14th century. In the 18th century. The British monarchy founded an Irish equivalent, Most Illustrious Order of St. Patrick.
History of Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle
It is said that in 786 A.D., during a battle with Aethelstan, the Cross of St. Andrews appeared before Achaius, King of Scots. After the battle, the victorious Scottish King established The Order of the Thistle and dedicated it to St. Andrews.
Many historians dispute this version because Achaius died a century before his foe.
Display of royal pageantry
Though Charles turned 74 last November, his birthday as a royal monarch will be celebrated from this June onwards.
There will be a flypast of military aircraft past the imperial balcony this weekend.
