King Charles III: At a multireligious coronation ceremony held at Westminster Abbey, King Charles III was formally installed as the ruler of Britain. When his mother Queen Elizabeth passed away in September of last year, Charles took her position as monarch. At 74, he also became the oldest British monarch to wear the 360-year-old St. Edward’s Crown while seated on a 14th-century throne in London’s Westminster Abbey.

About 100 heads of state and dignitaries, including US first lady Jill Biden, watched as Charles was crowned at the abbey, which has hosted all of the nation’s coronations since William the Conqueror back in 1066. During the two-hour ceremony, which was rooted in history but also made an effort to show a monarchy and country that were oriented to the future, his second wife Camilla, 75, was proclaimed queen.
