Many incidents of human flesh being eaten by humans keep coming to the fore. But it was not a common occurrence. Issei Sagawa, infamous in the history of Japan as “The Ko Bay Cannibal”, has once again come into the limelight. This was the dreaded killer whose exploits created a sensation across the country. He called his Dutch study part to the room and first committed the murder and then raped the dead body. After that, he kept eating meat in pieces for many days. He had eaten the leg and most of the body parts.
Issei Sagawa, known in Japan as “The Kobe Cannibal”, died of pneumonia on 24 November. Only relatives attended her funeral. His younger brother and friend said in a statement that no public ceremony was held. The reason behind this is such an act done 41 years ago which gave him a new and dreadful identity.
What happened 41 years ago. In 1981 when Sagawa and her Dutch friend Renée Harteveldt were study partners. He invited her to his room one night. Reni didn’t understand Sagawa’s intentions and left. After dinner, the devil woke up in Sagawa’s mind. He first shot Renee in the neck. Then after the death was confirmed, he raped the dead body. Then the dead body was divided into many parts.
For several days after the murder, Gava continued to feed on pieces of Reni’s body. He had eaten the leg and other parts of Heartvelt’s corpse.
Why killed and how was he caught
Sagawa threw the remaining parts of the corpse into a lake. Because of this he got caught by the police and the matter came to light. During interrogation, Sagawa made some startling revelations. He told the police that he had attacked Hartwelt because of her beauty and good health.
After the murder, he tasted that human flesh, which he liked very much. Later he ate fried human flesh for several days.
Release from a mental asylum
Issei Sagawa was imprisoned for a few years and then in a mental asylum, where he underwent medical counseling. Issei was freed on 12 August 1986. He lived in Tokyo before his death. Issei also worked part-time as a commentator and public speaker.
Sagawa lived with his brother in his last years. He was suffering from stroke in the last time. Despite being on a wheelchair, he had no sympathy for women. In a 2013 interview, she commented on posters of Japanese women – “I think they look delicious”.
