The Japanese woman, whose video of being groped by a group of men on Holi in Delhi’s Paharganj area went viral on Twitter, took to the microblogging site on Saturday to apologise to those who were offended by the video and to declare her love for India despite what had happened to her during the festival of colours.
The woman claimed in a lengthy Twitter thread that was posted in Japanese on Saturday that she had originally posted the video but later erased it out of fear. The woman added in Japanese, “We sincerely apologise to those who were hurt by the video.
The Japanese woman claimed that she had heard that Holi was a risky time for women to be outside. When a gang of males accosted her and forcibly painted colours on her, she was with a group of 35 friends.
The Japanese woman said that the video was accidentally filmed by a Japanese friend of hers and that no ill will towards Holi was intended.
Here’s what she said:
“The original Holi festival is a wonderful and fun traditional festival with the purpose of celebrating the arrival of spring by pouring coloured powder and water on each other and enjoying it regardless of skin colour or social status,” she wrote.
“I would like to express my sincere apologies for causing concern and anxiety in many ways, even though my goal was to convey the positive aspects and joys of India,” she added.
The woman said she loved everything about India and had gone to India many times, and she expressed confidence in police response. Even if something like this happens, the nation is so great that you can’t help but love it, she wrote.
On Friday, a video showing the woman being harassed and groped by a group of guys in the Paharganj area of Delhi surfaced. Even one of the men cracked an egg on top of her head. In the footage, she was also seen slapping one of the males.
About the case
The Japanese woman has moved to Bangladesh after leaving India. In the meantime, the Delhi Police became aware of the popular video. Although no formal complaint was made in the matter, the police even so booked three young people, among them a minor, and charged them with violating IPC Section 354 (attempt to insult a woman’s modesty).
According to Sanjay Sain, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Delhi), they have filed a case against the defendants to make it abundantly clear that no form of annoyance will be permitted in a nation that welcomes tourists.
