Pornhub’s new owner said in a recent statement that governments should make porn boring and normal. He also told media agencies that instead of repressing porn sites, governments should take pride in sexual expression. Ethical Capital Partners (ECP) are the new owners of Pornhub. They bought this controversial website three months back.
Pornhub ran into controversy in 2020 after New York Times alleged that the website had several videos and images that depicted rapes and child porn. The NYT article said, “Its site is infested with rape videos. It monetizes child rapes, revenge pornography, spy cam videos of women showering, racist and misogynist content, and footage of women being asphyxiated in plastic bags. A search for “girls under 18” (no space) or “14yo” leads in each case to more than 100,000 videos. Most aren’t of children being assaulted, but too many are.
In hot waters
Pornhub got into severe trouble after the publication of this article. Many countries banned this website and Visa and Mastercard stopped processing Pornhub’s payments.
Facing these charges, Mindgeek sold Pornhub to ECP in May 2023. However, it took Mindgeek two years to sell the website.
Running into legal issues
ECP’s acquisition of Pornhub has resulted in a slew of legal issues. The state of Utah forced the new owner to pull down Pornhub and its other websites over age verification issues.
India Today reports that two of Mindgeek’s sites don’t have any age verification measures and could face a ban.
ECP head Solomon Friedman says he favours that minors should not be allowed on Pornhub. “The only solution that accomplishes both of these goals is device or browser-based verification,” he added while speaking to AFP. Friedman says 8 million offensive content pieces were removed from Pornhub in 2021.
