National Disaster Management Agency informs about the incident
According to the National Disaster Management Agency’s social media message, more than 90 people were caught in the landslide, and 59 have been found safe, with 22 still missing. In addition to the 12 dead, eight people were hospitalised.
Suffian Abdullah, the district police chief, addressed the media and stated that nearly 400 people from various agencies had been deployed for the search-and-rescue operation.
According to Norazam Khamis, the department’s director, the landslide fell from an estimated height of 30 metres (100 feet) above the campsite and covered an area of about one acre (0.4 hectare).
The disaster occurred just outside the Genting Highlands, a scenic hill country area in the Batang Kali district north of the capital known for its resorts and natural beauty. Selangor has previously experienced landslides, which were frequently blamed on forest and land clearance.
A year ago, flooding caused by torrential rain displaced approximately 21,000 people in seven states across the country.
