Maldives President’s Indirect Jibe at India Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, in a press conference after a five-day visit to China, indirectly took a jibe at India, stating, “We may be small, but this doesn’t give them the license to bully us.” The statement follows diplomatic tensions between India and Maldives over derogatory remarks made by Maldivian politicians about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep.

China Expresses Opposition to External Interference in Maldives Affairs

As diplomatic tensions rise, China has expressed its opposition to external interference in the internal affairs of the Maldives. A joint statement emphasized China’s support for the Maldives’ sovereignty and independence. Three ministers from the Maldives were suspended after making derogatory remarks about PM Modi’s visit.

Maldives Seeks China’s Support in Tourism During President’s Visit

During his visit to China, President Muizzu appealed to Beijing to intensify efforts to send more tourists to the Maldives, seeking to revive the tourism sector. China and the Maldives signed 20 agreements, including cooperation in tourism, and expressed commitment to building a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.

Among the 20 agreements signed between China and the Maldives, cooperation in tourism featured prominently. Efforts to increase Chinese tourists to the Maldives were discussed, with the signing of an Action Plan for Building a China-Maldives Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership (2024-2028).
