fire: According to Reuters, a massive fire broke out on Wednesday in an arms factory in Khartoum. Sudan’s two military factions are fighting each other to control this building which contains vast amounts of ammunition and arms. The two factions are the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Eyewitnesses said that the RSF attacked the heavily protected Yarmouk complex which stores large amounts of arms and ammunition. This attack was repulsed by the artillery and air strikes conducted by the Sudanese Army.
The two sides have been fighting each other after a cease-fire brokered between them by Saudi Arabia and the United States a fortnight ago.
A local resident, Nader Youseff told Reuters that violent clashes have taken place between the RSF and the Army involving planes and artillery.
“Huge explosions”
Youseff also said that the arms factory is located close to fuel and gas depots. “Any explosion could destroy residents and the whole area”, he added.
Another resident living close to the arms factory said he heard huge explosions on Wednesday. He also told Reuters said that the fire that broke out on Sunday morning later intensified because bombs had hit the fuel depots.Houses around the arms factory were also hit by shells and bullets.
The massive fire could be seen even in Omdurman and Bahri towns which are 15 kilometres away from Khartoum.

Why did the RSF attack the weapons factory?
Shortly after the war broke out, the RSF quickly seized Khartoum and surrounding areas. However, holding on to the capital would be a challenge for the paramilitary forces. The Sudanese Army continue to challenge the RSF positions with aerial and ground attacks.
Unless the RSF has fresh arms and ammunition, it can’t hold on to its positions in Khartoum, and hence this attack.
