Ovidio Guzman, the leader of a drug cartel and the son of imprisoned drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was apprehended by Mexican security forces, which set off a large wave of riots ahead of US President Joe Biden’s visit the next week.
Mexican Security Forces capture Drug Cartel Leader Ovidio Guzman
In Northern Sinaloa State, in the city of Culiacan, which serves as the headquarters of the strong drug cartel of the same name that El Chapo oversaw prior to his extradition to the United States in 2017, violence broke out.
Causalities for Mexican Security Forces
State Governor Ruben Rocha reported that eight civilians and 21 security personnel had been detained in addition to the seven security personnel who had been slain in the operation. He further claimed that 250 vehicles had been set on fire and used to block highways, that there had been 25 instances of looting, and that there had been 12 fights with security officers.
In 2019, a targeted attack to capture Ovidio was also planned, but it failed to materialise, greatly embarrassing the administration of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. However, a wave of unrest following his arrest in 2023 caused the government to close Culiacan’s airports and schools.

Videos posted to social media have appeared to show intense fighting overnight in Culiacan, with a hail of fire from a helicopter gunship and barrage lighting up the night sky. The city’s airport was engulfed in the exchange of gunfire and unrestrained bloodshed between rebels and government soldiers. Before a scheduled trip to Mexico City, Mexican airline Aeromexico disclosed that one of its aircraft had been shot at. Nobody has been hurt, though.
According to passengers who were meant to board the aircraft, the city is currently on fire, and there is a great deal of uncertainty and violence. They have stated that they would remain at the airport until it is safe to depart.
The cities of Mazatian and Culican have remained closed till the law and order situation does not improve after shots were also fired at a Mexican Airforce plane. For information that results in Ovidio’s arrest or conviction, the US has offered a reward of $5 million. Ovidio’s father, who is currently incarcerated in the most secure US Federal prison serving a life sentence, may or may not be extradited to the US.
Biden Administration pressure
The synthetic opioid fentanyl has caused a rise in overdose deaths in the United States, which has intensified demand to take action against drug cartels. However, the Sinaloa Cartel is one of the most potent drug trafficking groups in the world.
According to reports, the Biden administration put tremendous pressure on the Mexican government to take action against the Sinaloa Cartel and apprehend its leader Guzman. The notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel will be strengthened by Guzman’s capture, according to experts.
