Russia Birth Rate: Russia is facing a serious demographic crisis, with birth rates falling sharply. In response, President Putin‘s government is considering some unusual measures to reverse this trend. These include ideas like creating a “Ministry of Sex,” turning off the internet at night, and offering financial incentives for raising children.
Russia’s Population Crisis
Several factors are contributing to Russia‘s declining population. Rising living costs, long work hours, and the ongoing war in Ukraine have all played a role. The war has not only caused significant casualties but also led to many Russians leaving the country. As a result, the country’s population continues to shrink, putting pressure on the economy and social systems.
The Ministry of Sex: A Bold Proposal
To address this crisis, Nina Ostanina, a close aide to President Putin, is exploring the creation of a “Ministry of Sex.” Ostanina, who heads the Russian Parliament’s Committee on Family Protection, is reviewing this proposal. The goal is to promote higher birth rates by encouraging sexual activity. Putin himself has even suggested that Russians should take time during office breaks to increase the nation’s population.
The government is considering a variety of creative solutions. One proposal involves turning off the internet and lights between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. This measure would encourage couples to spend more time together, thus increasing the chances of conception.
Financial Incentives for Parents
Russia is also looking into providing extended maternity benefits. Under this plan, mothers would receive payments for raising children, making it easier to balance family life with financial stability.
In another proposal, the government would fund first dates for couples, with an allowance of up to Rs 5,000. Newlywed couples could also receive public money to spend their wedding night in a hotel, with a value of up to 26,300 roubles (approximately £208). These incentives aim to create a more family-friendly environment.
Putin’s Struggle with Russia’s Declining Population
The challenges faced by Russia are not easy to solve. President Putin’s government is under pressure to take action, and these bold ideas reflect the urgency with which they are addressing the issue. While the “Ministry of Sex” might seem outlandish, it underscores the seriousness with which Russia is confronting its demographic crisis.
