Russia-Ukraine War: Russia launched more than 70 missiles at Ukraine in one of its largest attacks since the war began, knocking out power in the country’s second largest city and forcing Kyiv to implement nationwide blackouts, according to Ukrainian officials.
CONFLICT
- According to Ukrainian officials, three people were killed when an apartment building in central Kryvyi Rih was hit, and another was killed in shelling in Kherson in the south.
- According to Mayor Ihor Terekhov, the strikes caused “colossal” damage to infrastructure in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, primarily affecting the energy system.
- According to the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, Ukraine shot down 60 of the 76 missiles fired at it by Russia on Friday.
- According to emergency services, a Ukrainian shelling of a Russian-controlled village in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine killed at least 11 people and left 20 more missing.
- Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said late Friday that only one-third of the city’s residents had heat and water, and 40% had electricity. The metro system, a vital mode of transportation, remained closed, he added.
- Moscow claims that its attacks are intended to disable Ukraine’s military. Ukrainians consider them a war crime. Reuters was unable to verify battlefield reports independently.

- European Union member states should buy arms in bulk after supplying Ukraine, according to the bloc’s defence agency, warning that the US may not always be able to protect Europe from threats.
- According to four industry sources, insurers may refuse to cover planes flying to Ukraine or ships sailing through the Black Sea as reinsurers – who insure the insurers – propose excluding the region from policies beginning next month.
