The Mukaab: Saudi Arabia’s crown prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman has announced to revamp downtown Riyadh and the centre of the new structure will be a building called The Mukaab. The building will house entertainment, commercial and residential complex which is a part of new complex. The 400 metre tall supercity will be open by 2030. However, the architecture of the building is facing backlash even before the project is materialised.

The Mukaab attracts flak
According to the local media channels, the development is located at the intersection of King Salman and King Khalid roads in the northwest of Riyadh over an area of 19 square km. The Saudi Arabia government has also released a promotional video of the upcoming project that has now attracted backlash. “A gateway to another world: #TheMukaab will be the world’s first immersive, experiential destination. Large enough to hold 20 Empire State Buildings, the global icon will feature innovative technologies to transport you to new worlds,” the caption read.
What led to backlash was the shape of the “The Mukaab” which is a cube shaped giant resembling to that of Kaaba – the House of Allah in Makkah.
“MBS wants to create a new Ka’ba called the Mukaab that is cube shaped also in Saudi. In a video announcing the project there are ZERO symbols of Islam. Don’t forget NEOM city that’ll have beaches & alcohol. Only a blind man pretending to be sleeping can’t see where this is going,” wrote one Twitter user.
“Abdi, I’m not sure about this one. Making a larger replica of ‘a certain cube shaped house’, and calling it mukaab, what’s more; dedicating it to entertainment… And I’m still not happy with this image either,” another user wrote.
“Saudi the land of Fitnah and Dajjal.. now constructing another replication of Kaba calling it Mukaab,” another Twitter user wrote.
