Morocco Earthquake: Late on Friday, a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Morocco’s High Atlas mountains, resulting in a tragic loss of at least 820 lives, leaving 672 individuals injured, and causing significant structural damage, as reported by the Interior Ministry, according to AFP. The most severe casualties and destruction took place in the vicinity of the earthquake’s epicentre in rural regions, as stated by the ministry. Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences and offered Morocco any necessary assistance in response to the damage.
Earthquake strikes at Morocco
The report mentioned that the earthquake’s epicenter was relatively shallow, at a depth of 18.5 km, and it occurred approximately 72 km (44 miles) southwest of Marrakesh and 56 km (around 35 miles) west of the town of Oukaimeden. The tremor occurred just after 11 pm local time (22:00 GMT), as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
Residents of Marrakech, the closest major city to the earthquake’s epicenter, reported that some buildings in the historic “Old City,” designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, were toppled during the quake. Local media channels, as reported by Reuters, shared images of a collapsed mosque minaret with debris strewn over damaged cars. The local authorities noted that the majority of casualties occurred in remote mountainous regions that were challenging to access.

During his inaugural address at the G20 Summit, the Prime Minister conveyed a message of global solidarity with the North African country. He said, “Extremely pained by the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the people of Morocco. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time.”
