Muharram 2022: The tenth day of Muharram, or Ashura, is a particularly solemn day of mourning for Shia Muslims. On this day, Shias across the world grieve the martyrdom of Imam Hussein at Karbala in modern-day Iraq.
The day is marked by holding rituals and reciting poetry about the sacrifice. Shia men and women also dress in black and parade through the streets slapping their chests and chanting.
Muharram mourning ceremonies are one of the most important rituals and customs in Shia culture and each country marks it in a different way according to its culture.
Muslims from all over the globe also travel to Karbala to do pilgrimages and visit the holy shrine of Imam Hussein and his family.
Ashura is an event that is significantly unique in the history of Islam and the history of humanity. Hussein’s determination and grit in Karbala taught generations of people high values and is an inspiration for free and God-seeking people until the end of history.
