Myanmar: The military junta of Myanmar reported that a passenger on a domestic flight was shot in the face on Friday when rebels fired on the aircraft as it was landing.
As the Myanmar National Airlines plane descended toward Loikaw, the capital of eastern Kayah state, carrying 63 passengers, a bullet pierced its fuselage.
Since Aung San Suu Kyi’s democratic administration was overthrown by a military coup in February of last year, Myanmar has been in upheaval, with hundreds of people having died in a crackdown on dissent.

Who are the Rebel Groups?
To fight the junta, anti-coup rebels have emerged all over the nation. Some of them have formed alliances with regional ethnic groups that have been at odds with the government for decades.
The junta claimed in a statement that the plane, which was departing from the capital Naypyidaw, came under fire on Friday morning at a height of roughly 1,000 metres (3,280 feet), about six kilometres (3.7 miles) north of Loikaw airport.
The Karenni National Progressive Party, an ethnic rebel force, and anti-junta militia members were held accountable for the shooting, according to the statement.

The statement read, “A passenger on board sustained a gunshot wound to the right face.”
Security authorities are carrying out security procedures in the vicinity of the incident, and the injured passenger is currently receiving treatment at Loikaw People’s Hospital.
According to a local monitoring group, the military’s crackdown on opposition since the coup has resulted in more than 2,300 deaths and 15,000 arrests.
The latest civilian death toll issued by the junta stands at almost 3,900.
