This morning, a plane from Kathmandu carrying about 72 passengers crashed in Pokhara, Nepal, according to Yeti Airlines. The wreckage contained at least 16 dead bodies, according to Nepali media.
The plane that crashed in western Nepal between the city’s old and new airports carried 68 passengers and four crew members. According to a spokesman of Yeti Airlines, the twin-engine ATR 72 aircraft was flying from Nepal’s capital city of Kathmandu.
A raging fire at the wreckage has hampered rescue operations, Nepali journalist Dilip Thapa told NDTV.
At 10:33 am, the 9N-ANC ATR-72 aircraft operated by Yeti Airlines departed Kathmandu, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).
While landing at the Pokhara airport, the aircraft crashed on the bank of the Seti River between the old airport and the new airport.
“We don’t know right now if there are survivors,” the airline’s spokesperson Sudarshan Bartaula told news agency AFP.
The plane caught fire as it crashed, and rescue workers were trying to put it off, a local official was quoted as saying. Rescue operations are going on.
