A high-quality beer needs high-quality water. Enter NEWBrew – a unique sustainable beer made using NEWater, Singapore’s own brand of ultra-high grade recycled water.
This is no ordinary beer, made with recycled sewage. The beverage is a collaboration between the country’s national water agency, PUB, and local craft brewery Brewerkz, proving that “sustainability can be delicious.”
First unveiled at a water conference in 2018, NEWBrew went on sale in supermarkets and at Brewerkz outlets in April. Sustainable beer from recycled water has grown quite trendy since NEWBrew’s debut in 2018. Water utilities in countries including Canada, Germany, and the US are attempting their own versions.
It is also an opportunity to cast the spotlight on climate change impacts such as droughts and floods, which threaten the world’s fresh water supply. As the population of the world grows and the environment becomes further affected by climate change, access to fresh drinking water dwindles. Globally, 785 million people lack access to clean drinking water.
However, the internet seems to have mixed reactions to this innovative beer. While people are usually thrilled about anything related to recycling and repurposing, netizens are not feeling quite the same considering the beer is made out of recycled water from sewage and urine.
According to BBC News, NEWWater, the recycled water that the beer is made of, is made out of a liquid that is recycled from sewage, filtered, and pumped into Singapore’s water supply.
According to Brewerkz, it is a “highly quaffable beer”, suitable for Singapore’s tropical climate, “with a smooth, toasted honey-like aftertaste.” And 95 percent of the tropical blonde ale beer is made out of NEWater, using “the finest ingredients, such as premium German barley malts, aromatic Citra and Calypso hops, as well as kveik, a highly-sought-after strain of farm-house yeast from Norway”.
