Niger Coup: West-African nation Niger’s armed forces has declared coup against the President Mohamed Bazoum on Wednesday 26 July. Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane went live on the national television with other soldiers and claimed to have overthrown President Mohamed Bazoum from power.

Country in turmoil

Early in the day, President Mohamed Bazoum was detained by the presidential guard in his residence in capital Niamey. Later at night, Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, spokesperson for group called ‘The National Council for the Safeguard of the country’ broadcasted the coup on national television.  In the statement by Colonel-Major, he said that the defense and security forces have decided to put an end to the regime of pro-western leader.

In the statement Colonel Major added that the coup was preceded with continuous disintegration of the security situation and poor financial and social administration.

In the broadcast, Colonel Major announced to have dissolved the constitution, further suspending all institution, closing off country’s Land and Air borders and declaring nation-wide curfew effected from 2200 to 0500 local time. Colonel Major has advised other nations and organization not to interfere in country’s matter.

Army Supports the Coup

The Nigerien army has expressed their fealty to the defense and security forces published in the statement signed by the army chief of staff Abdou Sidikou Issa. The statement posted by the Nigerien forces deemed the decision necessary to “avoid deadly confrontation between various forces which could cause bloodbath and tarnish the security of the population.” The statement further reads, “Any external military intervention, from whatever source, would risk having disastrous and uncontrollable consequences for our populations and chaos for our country.”

Stance of Nigeriens

The general populace of the West-African nation Niger is largely divided into different opinion of the following events. Hundreds of President’s supporters have opposed the coup and went on protesting against it, which later was dispersed after warning shot were fired by the soldiers.  Other who have welcome the military intervention, accused the Pro-Western leader of corruption and being incompetent to improve living standards or counter the Jihadist insurgency.
