Covid-19: A report from a US intelligence agency says there is no direct evidence that the Covid-19 virus stemmed from an incident in the Wuhan lab.
There have been several claims that the virus was created in China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology. Beijing has refuted all these claims.
No proof
“The Central Intelligence Agency and another agency remain unable to determine the precise origin of the Covid-19 pandemic, as both (natural and lab) hypotheses rely on significant assumptions or face challenges with conflicting reporting,”
However, the four-page report by the Office of the Director of national intelligence (ODNI) said the US intelligence community still could not eliminate the chances that the pandemic came from a laboratory. It also had not been able to discover the source of the virus.
The Guardian says US intelligence officials have been regularly “pushed” by lawmakers to determine the source of the pandemic. However, obstruction by the Chinese authorities has made this task difficult.
Observers of China-US relations say the newest report might anger Republicans who accuse Joe Biden’s administration of hiding classified information. Researchers might also accuse the Biden administration of not being forthcoming on the subject.
It is noteworthy that the ODNI report comes days after Secretary of State Blinken’s visit to Beijing. Both countries are trying to bring down tensions between them.
Much speculation
The origins of the pandemic have been subject to hectic speculation in the US and elsewhere. In February 2023, a Wall Street Journal article reignited this debate which suggested that the pandemic originated in a Wuhan lab.
FBI’s director Christopher Wray said on February 28 that the origins of Covid-19 were “most likely a potential lab incident” in the Chinese city of Wuhan
In March 2023, President Biden signed a bill to declassify all available information on the origins of Covid-19.
