Israel: Following the Red Cross’s call for fuel to be released in order to avoid overcrowded hospitals from “turning into morgues,” Israel announced on Thursday that there would be no humanitarian pause in its blockade of the Gaza Strip until all of its hostages are freed.
Israel-Hamas conflict
In response to the bloodiest attack on Jews since the Holocaust on Saturday, when hundreds of militants broke through the barrier wire and rampaged through Israeli communities, Israel has pledged to destroy the Hamas movement, which controls the Gaza Strip. The Israeli death toll increased to over 1,300 persons since Saturday, according to public broadcaster Kan. The majority included the shooting of citizens during a dance party, in their houses, or on the streets. Several international and Israeli hostages were returned to Gaza.
Following Israeli troops’ takeover of communities, the entire extent of the crimes became apparent. Homes were discovered littered with remains, including those of women who had been sexually assaulted and slain and children who had been shot and set on fire. In response, Israel has so far completely besieged the 2.3 million-person enclave and initiated the most potent bombing assault in the 75-year history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, demolishing entire neighbourhoods.
Electricity, Fuel and water supplies shut
According to Gaza officials, the attack has left over 1,200 Palestinians dead and over 5,000 injured. Hospitals’ emergency generator fuel is running low, and the only electric power plant has been turned off. In a statement, Fabrizio Carboni, Regional Director of International Committee of Red Cross, stated, “The human misery caused by this escalation is abhorrent, and I implore the sides to reduce the suffering of civilians.”
The statement further read, “As Gaza loses power, hospitals lose power, putting newborns in incubators and elderly patients on oxygen at risk. Kidney dialysis stops, and X-rays can’t be taken. Without electricity, hospitals risk turning into morgues.” Israel Katz, the minister of energy of Israel, declared that the siege would not end until the Israeli prisoners were liberated.
Israel Katz, the minister of energy of Israel, stated that the siege would not end until the Israeli detainees were free. In a post on X, he wrote, “Humanitarian aid to Gaza? No electrical switch will be lifted, no water hydrant will be opened and no fuel truck will enter until the Israeli hostages are returned home. Humanitarian for humanitarian. And nobody should preach us morals.”
Israel sets up new cabinet
On Wednesday, Israel established a new unity war cabinet, appointing opponents of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to senior positions. Hundreds of thousands of reservists have been called up in anticipation of a potential ground invasion of Gaza.
Just as Israel was about to come to an agreement to normalise relations with Saudi Arabia, the richest Arab nation, and months after Riyadh restored relations with its regional foe Iran, the Hamas sponsor, the conflict has shattered diplomatic relations in the region.
