North Korea: According to Seoul’s military, North Korea launched two ballistic missiles off its east coast on Sunday.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the launch on Sunday morning from the Tongchang-ri area of North Pyongan province, but gave no further details. The launch was also confirmed by the Japanese Prime Minister’s Office, according to the Associated Press.

North Korea had tested “High-thrust solid-fuel engine”
The launch came three days after North Korea announced that it had tested a “high-thrust solid-fuel engine” for a new strategic weapon, a breakthrough that could lead to a more mobile, harder-to-detect arsenal of intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the US mainland.
North Korea has conducted a series of nuclear-capable ballistic missile tests in recent months, including the launch of its longest-range liquid-fueled Hwasong-17 ICBM last month, which is designed to carry multiple warheads.
According to the Associated Press, some experts believe North Korea will eventually use an expanded arsenal to seek sanctions relief and other concessions from the US.

Others believe the country is still years away from acquiring such weapons
While some experts believe North Korea already has operational nuclear-tipped missiles capable of hitting the entire United States, others believe the country is still years away from acquiring such weapons because it has yet to publicly demonstrate it has the technology to protect warheads from the harsh conditions of atmospheric reentry.
However, North Korea’s nuclear attack capability remains unknown because all of its intercontinental ballistic missile tests in recent years have been conducted at a steep angle to avoid neighbouring countries, according to the news agency.
In response to North Korea’s advancing nuclear programme, the United States and South Korea have increased their regular military drills and pushed to strengthen their combined defence capability. North Korea has threatened to use nuclear weapons first in potential conflicts with the US and South Korea, and the US military has warned the North that using nuclear weapons “will result in the end of that regime.”
