North Korea: A Reuters report dated May 30, 2023, says North Korea will launch a military satellite to spy on its enemies. This news was issued by the state-run North Korean media agency, KCNA.
The news quotes Ri Pyong Chol denouncing the United States and South Korea for their “reckless ambition for aggression.” Chol is the vice-chairman of the powerful Central Military Commission of North Korea.
If launched, this will be Pyongyang’s first military reconnaissance satellite. Through it, North Korea plans to detect the movement of American and South Korean military assets in real time.
Both Washington and Seoul regularly conduct military drills near the North Korean waters. These exercises were scaled down during the Covid-19 pandemic but are expected to resume in 2023. North Korea considers these exercises as threats to its sovereignty.
KCNA also said that the nuclear-powered North Korea has “completed the development of its first military spy satellite” and the country’s president Kim Jong Un has okayed the final preparations for the launch.
Japan readies its forces
Tokyo has put its forces on alert following North Korea’s declaration to put a spy satellite in the sky. Though it is a satellite, Japan thinks that it will be launched with ballistic technology and thus can harm the country’s security. As a result, the Japanese government has put its missile forces on full alert. Tokyo will shoot down any ballistic object that invades its air space.
Close relations with China
North Korea is situated in North East Asia and is surrounded by South Korea in the south, Japan in the east and south-east and China in the north and west.
Pyongyang has friendly relations with Beijing, which supports it diplomatically. China also sent its forces to North Korea during the Korean War.
In return, North Korea recognizes the One China policy. Both countries have had friendly relations since 1949.
