Kim Jong Un: North Korea’s President Kim Jong Un has ordered his officials to stop suicides, which are “acts of treason against socialism.”
This order came after data showed that the number of suicides has risen in the northeastern Asian country significantly.
India Today, quoting Radio Free Asia, says that Kim Jong Un has told officials they will be held responsible for suicides in their jurisdictions. It’s unclear who the sources of Radio Free Asia are.
South Korean intelligence officials have estimated that the number of suicides in North Korea in May was 40% higher than last year. North Korea is a closed society and nobody outside the country knows what’s happening there.
Unnamed officials told Radio Free Asia that there are many cases of entire families committing suicides together. Furthermore, some of these families have left notes on how the country’s social system and poverty have forced them to take their lives.
“Shocked by the disclosure of suicide notes”
Officials from the North Hamgyong region in North Korea told Radio Free Asia that this order was delivered “in emergency meetings in each province of the party committee leaders at the provincial, city, and county levels”.
Radio Free Asia also said those who attended the meetings were shocked by what was written in the suicide notes.
Another official from Ryanggnng told Radio Free Asia said that “despite the suicide-prevention policy ratified by the general secretary, the officials were not able to come up with an appropriate solution.”
Kim Jong Un facing a midlife crisis
India Today says the North Korean dictator is facing a midlife crisis and is drinking the whole day.
Quoting a Seoul-based North Korean academic, India Today reports, “the leader is facing fresh anxieties over his personal health and safety as he nears 40.”
