Not guilty, says Donald Trump in Miami over Espionage Act case

Donald Trump: Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty in front of a federal judge in Miami on. Trump was appearing in a case regarding the illegal holding of classified documents and not handing them to the authorities.
He has been indicted by federal prosecutor Jack Smith. If convicted, Donald Trump faces several years of imprisonment. His political future is also at stake.
Trump used his Tuesday appearance to make a political statement to his supporters and foes. Seated in his car, the former President sent out several messages on Truth Social, a social media platform that he founded a few years ago.


Heavy turnout


Ahead of Trump’s appearance at the federal courthouse, Police Chief Morales said he anticipated a 50,000-strong crowd. He also told reporters that the police would put barricades on all streets in downtown Miami.
However, there was no chaos during Trump’s visit to the courthouse.
In January 2021, thousands of Trump supporters had collected in front of the Capitol building in Washington. Many of those assembled believed that the November 2020 Presidential elections were unfair and rigged.
There was an insurrection at that point in time when scores of pro-Trump protesters entered the Capitol building and threatened the lawmakers.

Massive support for Trump


According to a recent Reuters/IPSOS poll, 81% of Republicans say Trump is being unfairly targeted by the Democrats.
The former President has also received support from Ron DeSantis who says the probe has been weaponized by Trump’s political foes.
Going by current trends, Trump is leading the Republican nomination race. The Reuters/ IPSOS poll says that 41% of Republicans prefer Trump as President.
However, he is facing other charges as well. Trump is due to face a trial in March 2024 regarding undisclosed payments to a porn star.
