Now in the United States of America (USA), a new variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, is spreading rapidly. In the new cases coming there, 73.2 percent of the cases are related to this new variant. US health officials have reported this on Monday. On the other hand, the World Health Organization (WHO) has also called for greater efforts to end the epidemic in the next year.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the new variant has caused a record spike in Covid cases, leading to the withdrawal of tough restrictions in some countries, but President Joe Biden has no plans in the United States. So that lockdown can be imposed in the country.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that the Omicron variant accounted for 73.2 percent of new Covid cases in the US in the last week ended Saturday. Some parts of the country (Pacific Northwest, South and Midwest) already account for more than 90 percent of new infections.

Joe Biden is going to address the nation on Covid-19 on Tuesday. Three days before this, a mid-level officer who was with him for about half an hour, who is fully vaccinated, has been found to be Covid positive. However, Joe Biden’s Covid test has not come positive so far.
Preliminary data suggests that Omicron may be more contagious and may possibly be resistant against vaccines as well. However, despite this indication, it is not more serious than the Delta variant. This new variant was detected in South Africa in the last week of November. Since then it has reached many countries around the world.
