In a phone call on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the situation in Ukraine and how Moscow had handled an armed mercenary rebellion.
In response to the Wagner mercenary group’s mutiny last Saturday, the Kremlin said that PM Modi had expressed support for what it called the Russian leadership’s driven actions.
“In connection with the events of June 24 in Russia, Narendra Modi expressed understanding and support for the decisive actions of the Russian leadership to protect law and order, ensure stability in the country and the security of its citizens,” it said.
Discussion over regional and global topics
According to the office of Prime Minister Modi, the two leaders discussed regional and global topics of shared concern and assessed progress in their bilateral partnership. Putin also briefed PM Modi on recent events in Russia.
“While discussing the situation in Ukraine, PM reiterated his call for dialogue and diplomacy,” it said.
With the west uniting against Putin because of the war, Russia and Ukraine have been at war for more than a year.
The two leaders also talked about how their nations cooperate within the G20 and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). “Special attention was focused on cooperation within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the G20, where India holds the presidency, as well as within the BRICS format,” the statement said.
The uprising led by Yevgeny Prigozhin and his Wagner group on Saturday was the most significant test of President Putin’s authority in more than two decades of his rule.
The town of Rostov-on-Don was now under the authority of the Wagner mercenary force. When Prigozhin ordered his soldiers back, the uprising was put down.
