Operation Kaveri evacuates nearly 2400 Indians from conflict-torn Sudan

Sudan Crisis: According to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokeswoman Arindam Bagchi, the Indian government has evacuated close to 2,400 of its people so far as part of Operation Kaveri. With 300 people on board, INS Sumedha departed Port Sudan for Jeddah. According to Bagchi, this endeavour has resulted in the evacuation of 13 batches of Indians.

Three-day extension of the ceasefire agreement

Explosions and gunfire could be heard, and black smoke could be visible in the Sudanese capital Khartoum and other parts of the country as fighting between different factions continued. Several nations, including India, are rushing to evacuate their citizens from the conflict-torn country amid the clashes. The Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) traded accusations over a Turkish evacuation plane that was fired upon as it attempted to land at Wadi Seidna airbase, located 20 kilometres north of Khartoum, resulting in a three-day extension of the ceasefire agreement.

512 people have died and more than 4000 have been injured

Both rival factions, which were once allies and were instrumental in the 2019 coup that toppled Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, are at war for control of Sudan since April 15. Numerous people have been killed in the violence in the western Darfur region where the fighting has also spread. According to the United Nations, 512 people have died and more than 4,000 have been injured as a result of the violence so far.
