Pakistan Terror Attack: Amidst a tragic incident on March 26, a suicide attack at the Dasu hydroelectric project in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province claimed the lives of at least five Chinese engineers. Beijing promptly condemned the act of terrorism, expressing solidarity with Islamabad in its fight against global terrorism while reaffirming support for Pakistan.
Chinese Engineers Targeted in Pakistan Terror Attack
Nevertheless, China’s anti-terrorism stance comes under scrutiny, particularly regarding Pakistan’s handling of terrorist activities. Despite China’s extensive investment and participation in various projects across Pakistan, including Dasu, Gwadar, and Karachi, its nationals, engineers, and technical personnel have frequently faced attacks by unidentified assailants.
Beijing’s Response and Concerns
Since 2021, when nine Chinese engineers were targeted at the Dasu hydroelectric project, incidents of terror attacks against Chinese nationals have persisted. Subsequent assaults, such as the killing of three Chinese tutors at the Confucius Institute in Karachi in 2022, along with multiple incidents at the Gwadar Port, have raised concerns over the safety of Chinese citizens in Pakistan.
The precarious security environment in Pakistan, marked by insurgencies and anti-government activities, presents significant challenges for Chinese nationals operating in the country. Despite China’s economic interests and efforts to capitalize on Pakistan’s natural resources, security threats and resentment persist, particularly outside of Punjab.
While Beijing reiterates its commitment to combating terrorism and supporting Pakistan, the repeated targeting of Chinese personnel underscores the complex security dynamics in the region. There is an urgent need for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety of foreign nationals and investments in Pakistan amidst ongoing security challenges.
