News agencies have reported that Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) will arrest Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman and former Prime Minister Imran Khan any time today in a prohibited funding case. Summery for Imran’s arrest has been forwarded to DG FIA for final approval and four member team has been formed to arrest him.
Case pertaining to foreign funding against Imran Khan and ten other accused was registered by the FIA Corporate Banking Circle. It is alleged that Imran Khan and ten others had purportedly violated the Foreign Exchange Act and all the nominated persons were beneficiaries of the private bank account.
This case has been dragging on from 2014, when one the PTI’s founding member Akbar Khan had filed a case and alleged serious irregularities in party’s funding. However the party has come to defend itself staunchly and has denied any wrong doing following the case.
As early as 2018, a scrutiny committee was formed to examine the PTI’s funding mechanism. Final report was submitted by scrutiny committee in January 2022 after 95 hearings.
The report has lambasted PTI’s leadership of gross violations of finding laws by allowing collection of funds , without any source and details from foreigners.
