Pakistan: The corruption case that led to the arrest of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan led to violent protests all over the country. The government had to call in the army to help restore order. However, the country’s top court has now declared Khan’s arrest as “illegal,” paving the way for the immediate release of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief.
Khan’s Arrest and Subsequent Court Appearance
Khan was presented before the court amid tight security, with a convoy of 15 vehicles transporting him. Upon entering the courtroom, the bench resumed the hearing of the case, and Umar Ata Bandial, the Chief Justice of Pakistan, was outraged at the manner in which Khan was taken from the Islamabad high court. Bandial said that the arrest from the courthouse was a disgrace to the country’s legal system.
Khan’s Response to the Court’s Decision
Khan informed the court that he was “abducted” from the Islamabad high court premises and beaten with sticks. He was arrested on the orders of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a corruption case, and the country’s paramilitary Rangers entered the court to arrest him. The Chief Justice questioned how anyone could be arrested on court property, given that 90 to 100 Rangers officers entered the court for the purpose of the arrest.
The top judge asked Khan to tell his supporters to stop the violent protests that were happening all over the country because of his arrest. Khan, a former cricket player who became a politician, told the court that his party members would stay calm and that the country would not be affected. He stated that he had no idea what happened after his arrest and pledged to work towards justice for the people of Pakistan.
Conclusion
The court’s decision to declare Imran Khan’s arrest as “illegal” has come as a relief to his supporters and has put an end to the violent protests that had erupted across the country. The former Prime Minister has vowed to work towards justice and bring positive change to the country. The incident has once again highlighted the need for accountability and transparency in the country’s political system, and the importance of upholding the rule of law.
