Paris violence: The police officer who shot dead a 17-year car driver has apologized to the victim’s family. He has been charged with voluntary homicide, says BBC. The police officer’s lawyer says the former is devastated by the incident.
On Tuesday, a police officer shot dead a North African descent teenage driver at a traffic stop. This has caused widespread violence in Paris, Toulouse, Lille and other parts of France. Human rights activists say there is institutionalised racism in the French police force, a charge opposed by President Macron.
The victim’s name is Nabel M.
According to the BBC, so far 667 people have been arrested for rioting in Paris and elsewhere. The news service also said that rioters looted shops in Paris even as 40,000 policemen are on duty in the whole of France.
Looters ransacked shops near the Louvre Museum and the Champs Elysees.
A French media outlet, Le Parisien has reported that the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo will hold a press conference at 9 a.m. local time.
Videos circulating on social media showed a fire raging at the site of the under-construction Olympic pool. Paris will host the 2024 Olympics.
Eyewitnesses told the BBC that an ambulance and a fire engine were spotted in Aubervilliers, a suburb in north-east Paris.
“Home-made bombs”
Lucy Williamson from the BBC reports, “From Lille in the north to Marseille in the south, public buildings, shops and vehicles were attacked again last night.”
In Roublax, the guests of a bed-and-breakfast hotel were forced out after their building caught fire.
AFP says some rioters used homemade bombs to scare the police and citizens.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that President Macron will hold an emergency meeting to control the violence which has swept large parts of the country.
