Musarraf , a controversial fugure, renowned for heavy handed approach

Mussarraf was a controversial figure in Pakistan and he ruled it for a decade. However he has been credited with attracting foreign investment to Pakistan, which saw its economic growth in nearly 30 years during his rule, and was able to enjoy the support of the military and Pakistanis who backed his crackdown against militants.

Musarraf was also renowned for his heavy handed approach to dissent, which included arresting rivals such as current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharrief, and the imposing of an almost six week long state of emergency in which he suspended the constitution and censored the media.

Following the 9/11 attacks, Musharraf joined what Washington referred to as its “war on terror,” granting American soldiers access to land and airspace over landlocked Afghanistan to hunt down al Qaeda terrorists.

This choice went against Pakistan’s long-standing support for the Taliban, who up until their overthrow in late 2001 still held control of Afghanistan, and made Musharraf a target for local militant organisations. At least four attempts to kill him failed.
