Bangladesh Unrest: In a significant gesture of diplomatic goodwill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus, who has been sworn in as the head of the caretaker government of Bangladesh after a period of intense political instability that saw the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and a wave of protests led by students.
PM Modi Calls for Rapid Restoration of Normalcy in Bangladesh
PM Modi had expressed hope for the rapid restoration of normalcy in Bangladesh while insisting on the safety and protection of Hindus and other minority communities there. He said on X, “My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on assumption of his new responsibilities. We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities. India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfill the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security, and development.”
Yunus Returns Amid Crisis
The political instability in Bangladesh increased after massive demonstrations, spearheaded by students against some controversial quota system, that later toppled the then Sheikh Hasina’s government, forcing Yunus to rush back home from Paris, where he had gone for medical treatment.
Known globally for pioneering microcredit work, 84-year-old Professor Yunus founded Grameen Bank to take the microcredit revolution to the global level by giving small loans to the world’s poorest, mainly women. His work has helped to redefine what financial institutions can do in societal development and was key to lifting millions out of poverty.
Yunus Expresses Optimism for Bangladesh’s Future
At the news conference immediately upon his arrival in Dhaka, an emotional-looking Yunus sounded optimistic about the future of the country. “The country has the possibility of becoming a very beautiful nation. Whatever way our students will show us that way we will go ahead,” said Yunus.
With Yunus at the helm, Bangladesh embarks on this transitional phase. The world is keenly watching the developments with the hope that this nation will emerge stable and prosperous.
