PM Modi Egypt Visit: On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India met his Egyptian counterpart Mostafa Madbouly and top cabinet ministers to discuss trade and investment relations between the two nations. The visit marks PM Modi’s first state visit to Egypt and is the first instance of Indian Prime Minister visiting Egypt since 1997. In the meeting discussion on deepening of strategic partnership was also conducted. The visit comes after an invitation was extended from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. PM Modi also met with Dr. Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim Allam, the Grand Mufti of Egypt and members of Bohra Muslim community. He also visited Cairo’s historic Al-Hakim Mosque, where restoration work was undertaken with the help of India’s Dawoodi Bohra community.
Bilateral engagement
Upon his arrival PM Modi received a warm embrace from Egypt’s Prime Minister at the airport which was followed by a ceremonial welcome and guard of honor. The first meeting that PM Modi undertook was with the India Unit, a group that consists of high-level ministers established by President El-Sisi. The group is constituted to enhance diplomatic framework between India and Egypt. The bilateral discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in trade and investment, green hydrogen, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, IT sector, digital payment platforms and people to people relations. Among the ministers present in bilateral meeting were Egyptian Foreign Affairs Minister Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Industry and Trade Ahmed Samir and Finance Minister Mohamed Maait.
Strengthened confidence and Positive Response
After reaching Egypt, PM Modi had expressed his confidence in strengthening of ties between two countries in a tweet. He wrote, “I am confident this visit will strengthen India’s ties with Egypt. I look forward to talks with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and attending other programs.”
Ministry of External Affairs stated that Egyptian establishment appreciated positive response from their Indian counterparts and anticipated strengthening of bilateral ties in different sectors. Pm Modi also paid his respects at Heliopolis War Cemetery to honor Indian troops who sacrificed their lives for Egypt in World War I. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to meet Egyptian President Fattah Al-Sisi on Sunday.
