PM Modi visits Egypt: PM Narendra Modi, who is on a 2-day official visit to Egypt, visited the 11thcentury Al-Hakim mosque in Cairo.
Besides being an important landmark in the city, the Al-Hakim mosque is associated with the Dawoodi Bohra community in India. Mint says this mosque has been repaired with the funds provided by this community.
Mr Modi has called Dawoodi Bohras as members of his family.
Close ties with Dawoodi Bohras
Mr Narendra Modi has had cordial ties with this religious organization since he became the Gujarat CM. In 2011, he celebrated the 100th birth anniversary celebrations of the community’s head Syed Burhanuddin.
Three years later, Mr Modi travelled to Mumbai to offer condolences to Syed Burhanuddin’s son and successor SyednaMufaddal Saifuddin.
In 2015, as PM, Mr Modi again visited SyednaMufaddal Saifuddin. Next year, the Syedna visited PM Modi and both remembered the latter’s with Bohra Muslims.

Though Bohras number only 5 lac in India, they are very wealthy and unlike other Muslims, this community rejects the first three Caliphs.
Why is Modi visiting Egypt?
Both countries have had strong trade relations since 1978. The current trade size between Egypt and India is $7 billion.
Though Muslim in character, Egypt is a modern state and has ties with Israel.
Mr Modi’s visit to Egypt is expected to provide heft to India’s position as the champion of Global South. During his state visit, he had called for the inclusion of the African Union in the G20.
From Egypt’s point of view, Modi’s visit is important because this helps Cairo to diversify its international relations which are mostly Western in outlook.
Mr Modi’s Egypt visit will also pave the way for increased investments in the Middle Eastern country.
